Assoc. Prof. Dr Tran Thi Giang Huong comes from Viet Nam, a dynamic country with a rapidly emerging economy in the Region. Dr Tran previously served in senior positions at the Ministry of Health of Viet Nam, currently she serves as Director of the Division of Programmes for Disease Control, WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific. (WPRO)
Dr Tran has taken a leading role in the response to Covid-19 in the Region and will continue to use this experience to advocate for pandemic preparedness and response to emergencies in the Region.
Among her priorities, Dr Tran emphasizes strengthening health systems through primary health care with a focus on reaching the unreached and achieving Universal Health Coverage.

KEY PRIORITIES
DR TRAN IS COMMITTED TO LEAD THE WPRO WORK SUPPORTING MEMBER STATES BY FOCUSING ON FIVE KEY PRIORITIES AS FOLLOWS:

Transform health systems, especially primary health care, to improve people's health outcomes, with the focus on vulnerable populations to achieve universal health coverage.
Improve capacity to prepare and respond to health emergencies through strengthening surveillance and early warning systems, increase preparedness and response capacity and strengthen cooperation among Member States on health emergencies.
Promote healthier population as a central goal of society across different sectors and levels of government; accelerate the implementation of health-enabling policy to address the social determinants of health; establish the co-benefits with other sectors on climate change and environmental health, and address population ageing.
Create a motivating and supporting working environment and foster a respectful workplace culture; strengthen the effectiveness of WPRO's workforce and enhance coordination across three levels of the organization to fully utilize WHO's potential to support Member States.
Strengthen partnerships - including with sectors beyond health - and establish new partnerships to support Member States in implementing global and regional strategies and policies at both national and sub-national levels and facilitate knowledge sharing and exchange among Member States.

PUBLIC HEALTH LEADERSHIP

Throughout her career, Assoc. Prof. Tran Thi Giang Huong has demonstrated exceptional public health leadership, directing significant initiatives to improve health outcomes and promote health equity. Global Health Diplomacy

Led establishing a Global Health Diplomacy Office, serving as a bridge between Viet Nam and the international community, successfully mobilising technical and financial support for Viet Nam’s health sector.

Global Health Influence

Served as an alternate member of the WHO Executive Board, contributing to the global health agenda.

Global Fund Engagement

Served as Vice-Chair of the Global Fund Country Coordinating Mechanism, working closely with board members and other partners to develop strategies and facilitate the implementation of Global Fund-supported programs in Viet Nam.

Health Partnership Group

Founded the Health Partnership Group, coordinating and strengthening collaboration between the Ministry of Health of Viet Nam and development partners in the health sector.

Mekong Basin Disease Surveillance (MBDS)

Chaired the MBDS, focusing on infectious disease surveillance in the Mekong Basin subregion and strengthening cross-border collaboration for infectious disease prevention and control.

Malaria Elimination Support

Served as a Member of the RAI (Regional Steering Committee for the Global Fund's Regional Artimisinin-resistance Initiative), supporting malaria elimination efforts in the Mekong subregion.

Academic Contributions

Published 50 books, monograph and academic papers and received several awards for public and global health contributions.
